    Desegregation/segregation
    May 17th, 1954
    NAACP

    Brown I decision/Brown II decision
    Affirmative Action
50th anniversary of Brown vs. Board of Education
  • Have students look up the word, "deliberate" in the dictionary. Ask them to formulate some ideas about what the title "All Deliberate Speed" means.

  • Discuss the significance of the title and the meaning of "deliberate" in this context. What significance did that word have in the ruling?
  • After the decision, was segregation addressed at an appropriate "deliberate" speed? In what ways is segregation still an unresolved issue in the United States?
  • At the end of the interview, host Brian Lamb asked, "Will the day come when you no longer need a black student union?" How is this question relevant to the book's topic? What was Mr. Ogletree's answer? What are students' answers?
