Chris Cox, Chief Lobbyist for the National Rifle Association, discusses the 2004 election and the Second Amendment of the Constitution. This discussion takes place on the day the federal ban on assault weapons is set to expire. Mr. Cox debates the impact this ban has had in reducing crime and defends the Republicans in Congress who did not act to renew the ban. The clip start time is 8:44 and ends at 14:31.

From Classroom Teachers   | General ideas for using clips
  • Campaign specific What do George W. Bush's actions on the assault weapon ban indicate about his position? What is John Kerry's position on the assault weapon ban? For some people a single issue, like gun control, determines how they vote. These people are often referred to as "single issue" voters. How strongly do you feel about this issue as it relates to the Second Amendment? Will this issue be important in the campaign?
  • Media literacy What organization and point of view does the guest represent? What politcal party is his organization typically associated with? What is his overall "message"? Watch the clip again and transcribe one exchange between the guest and a caller or the host. Did he answer the question effectively? Explain. What techniques does he use to communicate his views? (i.e. repeated/emphasized words or phrases, tone, statistics, etc.) How do indviduals representing interest groups affect the campaign?
  • More ideas This clip's topic, gun control, touches on the conflict between freedom and security. How do we resolve the conflicts between competing "goods" in America? Does it make sense to eliminate all guns owned by private citizens? Does it make sense to allow private citizens to own any weapon of their choice? Are there any rights in the Constitution that are absolute? that cannot be limited in favor of another right? Should there be? If they are limited does that mean our Constitution doesn't really matter? Who gets to decide these issues? OR What domestic policy issue was the assault weapon ban intended to address? What other ways are the candidates proposing to address this issue? OR How does this story illustrate the ways in which the executive and legislative branches interact? How did politics play a role?
