From Classroom Teachers   | General ideas for using clips
  • Campaign specific What is the issue raised in this confirmation hearing? What issue specifically is being raised in this clip? Differentiate between: partisan, non-partisan, and bipartisan. Is it appropriate for Rep. Goss, as a Republican House Member, to participate in presidential campaigns? What about as a CIA director? Is it appropriate for Sen. Rockefeller to be raising this issue? Consider whether or not, or in what contexts Members of Congress should be non-partisan.
  • Media literacy Describe the tone with which Sen. Rockefeller speaks. What is the nature of his questions? Is the tone of Rep. Goss's reply similar to or different from that of his questioner? What are the goals of each of them in this exchange? Whose camera angle is more favorable? To what degree does the fact that a presidential election is 50 days away impact this hearing? Why did the media rate this exchange so highly in their stories?
  • More ideas List the responsibilities of Congressional committees. What responsibility do you observe in this clip? What general observations can you make about Congress and its role within the federal government by observing this clip? Considering Members have to go up for re-election every 2 or 6 years, how highly do voters value the committee work they do?
