From Classroom Teachers | General ideas for using clips
Campaign specific Who is Kitty Kelly? Review the term "unauthorized biography". Are the personal lives of candidates relevant to an election? Consider similar stories about candidates in American history. Have the Bush or Kerry campaigns responded to allegations in this book? Should they? How might this book effect the election? Was it meant to?
Media literacy In the speech, Kitty Kelly says she spent four years writing the book, interviewed almost 1,000 people and has 10,000 pages of transcriptions, and always more than one source. Why is corrboration important? How reliable are her sources? Through all of the available media sources and outlets, especially the internet, can people raise and investigate information themselves and decide what is "believable"? What is the difference between the reports in The Washington Post and The Houston Chronicle? Imagine how the the people involved in this story would tell it from their perspective.
More ideas Review the term "oligarchy". The title of the book refers to the "Bush Dynasty". How is it that so many members of one family can gain high political office? Is this a dynasty, and is a dynasty something inherently anti-democratic? OR Kitty Kelly says many news outlets cancelled bookings promoting her book under pressure from the White House. Is it important to protect the rights of people like Kitty Kelly to write books such as this one?
