Charlie Brennan, host of "The Charlie Brennan Show" on KMOX Radio discusses the upcoming presidential debate in St. Louis, Missouri. In this clip, Mr. Brennan discusses the "critical" role Missouri has played in past presidential elections and is playing as a swing state in the 2004 election.

From Classroom Teachers   | General ideas for using clips
  • Campaign specific    What is a "swing state"? How does Missouri fit the definition of a swing state? What trend does Missouri follow (or set) in presidential elections? What voting trends are observable within the state? Answer the same questions for your own state. Why would a candidate choose to stop campaigning in a swing state?
  • Media literacy    Is the media and candidate attention paid to swing states like Missouri likely to lead to low voter turnout or voter apathy in other states? What is the impact of campaign ads airing in a state at this stage of a campaign? What is the impact of personal appearances? What kind of influence can a local radio talk show host have in an election? Did you detect any bias or candidate preference in Charlie Brennan?
  • More ideas   Describe the content of the letter the Archbishop of St. Louis wrote to Catholics in St. Louis. Did he endorse a specific candidate? Should religious officials "mix" religion and politics by endorsing specific issue positions and/or candidates? Should candidates own religious views be part of their campaign messages? What role will/has religion played in this election?
