From Classroom Teachers   | General ideas for using clips
  • Campaign specific    Cheney talks about Michigan and Midwest values. What values is the Republican party identifying as Midwestern values? Are they different from values in other regions of the country? Identify how the states in the Midwest voted in 2000. What issues is Cheney using to appeal to the voters? What other issues will affect the vote there? What criticisms did the candidate level at Democratic Nominee John Kerry? Do you agree with his criticism? For example, did Kerry turn his back on the troops by voting against a particular bill?
  • Media literacy    Were the Vice President's comments tailored for people living in Michigan and the Midwest? What examples could you offer? If the nightly news is looking for 10-15 second sound bites, did they find any in Vice President Cheney's remarks? Which sound bite would you have selected for your national television audience? Local audience? Who is standing behind and beside the candidate? How is the audience responding? How do the visuals, and audience contribute to the message of the event?
  • More ideas   When did "liberal" start being used as a derogatory term? What are the characteristics of effective leadership? Do they differ from those characteristics necessary in an effective campaigner? Is Vice President Cheney an effective leader? Is he an effective campaigner? Does he serve the president better as a debater or stump speaker?
