Former Vice Pres. Al Gore delivers a major policy speech in which he critiques Pres. Bush's record in many areas, specifically Iraq, jobs retention and creation, the environment and people's trust in government. In this clip, Gore lists examples of false “impressions” the President has given voters. This clip starts at 24:05 and ends at 31:44.

From Classroom Teachers   | General ideas for using clips
  • Campaign specific    Where is former Vice President Al Gore delivering this speech? Why would it be delivered at this venue? What charges does he bring against President Bush and his administration? What evidence does Gore offer to support his claims? What evidence has Bush offered that could be used to refute Gore's assertions? What is the meaning of the term "right- wing ideologue?" What is its effect on voters? Is Gore giving a campaign speech? If so, what strengths and weaknesses does he bring to the campaign trail?
  • Media literacy    Who was in the audience? How has the sponsor of this event, moveon.org, been using various media in this campaign? To what effect? Gore says that the Republican party has offered misconceptions to the voters. How is that possible? Could the same be said of the Democratic party? How can the media play a role in either helping candidates propogate false information, or preventing it?
  • More ideas   To what degree do ideologies rather than facts drive public policy? What are some instances in history where presidents or other prominent elected officials were known for policies driven by a particular ideology? How has this helped or hurt them as leaders?
