The clip notes that New Mexico’s population is 42% Hispanic. Do Hispanics make up a single voting bloc, or, in other words, do most Hispanic voters tend to vote for one party over another? Why is courting the Hispanic vote so important in the 2004 presidential election? Traditionally, is the voter turnout rate among Hispanics in the Southwestern states high or low? With only five electoral votes, why is New Mexico considered a battleground state? Look at the results of the 2000 Election. Which candidate, Al Gore or George W. Bush, won New Mexico? What was the winner’s margin? How did the neighboring Southwestern states vote in 2000? Is it likely that one candidate could win all of the Southwestern states in the 2004 presidential race? Will New Mexico’s electorate influence voters in neighboring states?
Media literacy Mr. Sanchez says that Sen. Kerry is on the “wrong side” of all the issues Hispanics care about. After listening to both Mr. Sanchez and Mr. Wertheim, list the issues important to Hispanics. What positions do Pres. Bush and Sen. Kerry take? Which candidate do you believe the majority of Hispanic voters in New Mexico will support? Which candidate do you believe Hispanic voters in other Southwestern states will support? in Southeastern states? in Northeastern states? How are the candidates courting Hispanic voters in other parts of the country?
