Campaign specific
These rallies took place only two days before Election Day. What components of each candidate’s speech can be described as “closing arguments?” Do either of the candidates repeat catchphrases from along their campaign trail? What words/phrases have you heard before? With forty-eight hours to go until the election, what is the purpose of Sen. Kerry’s rally in New Hampshire? of Pres. Bush’s rally in Cincinnati? Are the last few campaign events more important than others over the past year? Why?
Media literacy Can you decipher any similarities between the candidates’ speeches from Oct. 31? How do their tones here differ from other campaign events you’ve seen or from campaign ads? What words and/or expressions do both candidates share as they make their closing appeals to voters? Can you decipher any common themes in their speeches? On the same note, what words and/or expressions set them apart from one another? What does the music at the end of each event say about the candidates as well as about the audiences? How are the candidates dressed? Do their appearances reflect upon the target group of their message?
More ideas Why did the candidates choose New Hampshire (4 electoral votes) and Ohio (20 electoral votes) for their rallies in the closing days of the campaign trail? What other states are Sen. Kerry and Pres. Bush (and their running mates, spouses, spokesmen) visiting during the last two days of the campaigns? In the last days of the campaign trail, which battleground states do the candidates see as most important? Do you foresee any surprise “upsets” as the results come in?
Make your predictions with the Presidential Race Chart.
