Excerpts from Republican George W. Bush's victory speech and Democrat John Kerry's concession speech in the 2004 presidential election. Both make an appeal for unity and look ahead to the future by identifying policy priorities.

From Classroom Teachers   | General ideas for using clips
  • Campaign specific  What are the goals of an acceptance speech? Did George W. Bush accomplish those goals? What else did he accomplish? What is the goal of a concession speech? Did John Kerry accomplish those goals? What else did he accomplish? To what degree should or can the candidates now "unify" the country? Do you take these leaders at face value in their call for unity? Is there evidence to suggest each remains locked in self-interest and is just going through niceties of the process?
  • Media literacy   It is a significant decision for a network to call an election for a candidate. Is calling an election crossing the line from reporting news to creating news? Some Bush supporters complained that the media did not call Ohio, thus delaying George W. Bush's victory speech. Why would the press be a little slower to call states than in the last election? Consider the 24 hours preceding John Kerry's concession. What are exit polls and how are they conducted? How is bias minimized? What role does the media play in "calling" an election? What role should it play?
  • More ideas   What predictions do you have for George W. Bush's second term? What national role will John Kerry play from his position as a Senator?
