Newsweek photographer, Charles Ommanney, discusses his behind-the-scenes perspective of both candidates after covering them on the campaign trail.  Ommanney and other Newsweek staff appeared on a special C-SPAN call-in show to discuss this year's election results special edition.  Newsweek, a U.S. news magazine, has a tradition of quickly issuing a special edition after presidential elections.  This clip starts at 37:50 and ends at 44:57.

From Classroom Teachers   | General ideas for using clips
  • Campaign specific Consider the role of the candidates' families in a campaign. Should a presidential candidate's family take an active role in the campaign? Was Bush's family an asset? To what degree? What observations did this photographer make about American elections?
  • Media literacy    What is the goal of the Newsweek special issue? Why would Newsweek wait until after the election to release an article like this? Would it be of more value if the reporting and analysis were available to voters before Election Day? What does he mean when he refers to the "control" campaigns practice with regard to the press? What was the difference between covering the Kerry vs. the Bush campaign? Who has the upperhand in a campaign, the press, or the candidate and campaign staff?
  • More ideas  What can photographs reveal about a campaign that a written narrative cannot? What can't photographs communicate?  How does this photographer portray George W. Bush? What does his portrayal contribute to the campaign? What does it contribute to history?
