Student Views of the 2004
Presidential Debates


C-SPAN provided media credentials for three high school students from the local communities at each debate site.  Below are video stories and interviews produced by the students in Miami, Cleveland, St. Louis, and Tempe.

  Miami, Florida Presidential Debate: September 30, 2004

    Miami Spin Room Coverage (8 min.)
Student videographers, Bianca Akhtarekhavari, Amanda Almirall, and Christie Maimo of Palmetto High School in Pinecrest, Florida, were selected by the local Comcast Cable affiliate.  Their video 
covers the C-SPAN School Bus, University of Miami campus political rallies, and their experience in the spin room at the Miami debate.  Also included (at 6:24) is news coverage of the students by the local NBC affiliate.

The featured student videographers (listed above) were selected by the local Adelphia Cable affiliate.  These Westlake High School students chose to cover three separate political issues in their stories about the spin room at the Cleveland debate.

  St. Louis, Missouri Presidential Debate: October 8, 2004
St. Louis Spin Room Coverage (28 min.)
Ladue Horton Watkins High School students, Tal Kopan, Ben Solomon, and Bobby Sutherland were selected by the local Charter Cable affiliate.  The video they produced is a half-hour episode of the high school's monthly Charter Cable show, 
"Ladue View."  The students and their classmates in an advanced video journalism course produced five stories on politics, youth issues, and the debate.   
  Tempe, Arizona Presidential Debate: October 13, 2004
    

Tempe Spin Room Coverage (13 min.)    
Arcadia High School students, Phil Del Real, Alissa Irei, and Seth Rolling were selected by the local Cox Communications affiliate.  "The youth voice in the 2004 election," is the theme of their story from the spin room at the Tempe, Arizona debate.  This piece connects key topics from the campaign to young voters and their decisions about voting in the election.
