RULES

1. Each entry must consist of a written work of not more than 272 words in length (not including the title) and be accompanied by a completed Lincoln Essay Contest entry form. The entry must be the original work of the student entrant. An individual student may only submit one entry.

2. Entries will be selected for prizes on the basis of: a) the success with which they have captured the contest's theme ("a new birth of freedom" in the 21st century), b) quality of expression, c) creativity, d) keeping within the 272 word limit, and e) overall presentation.

3. Entries submitted by mail must be typed, double-spaced. Entries submitted via email must be submitted in plain text. (Entrants are encouraged to keep the original work and submit a copy.)

4. Entries must be received at C-SPAN by 5:00 pm ET, Tuesday, March 1st, 2005.

5. Student entrants must be currently enrolled in the 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, or 12th grade in any state in the United States or the District of Columbia. Students may be enrolled in public or private schools, or be home-schooled. Students in grades 6-8 will be considered "middle school" entrants; grades 9-12 will be considered "high school" entrants.

6. Faculty may provide guidance and critiques to student entrants but may not participate in conceiving or writing the essay. The grand prize winner or his/her school will designate a faculty member to receive the teacher prize.

7. All entries, the receipt of which will not be acknowledged, become the property of National Cable Satellite Corporation, d/b/a C-SPAN and will not be returned. Entrants, without any compensation from C-SPAN, grant permission to C-SPAN to use their names, likenesses and entries for promotional purposes related to C-SPAN and its activities. By submitting an entry, entrants (i) represent that their entries constitute original works of creativity that do not violate the property rights of any other person, and (ii) grant C-SPAN the right to exhibit, distribute, televise and otherwise use the entries in various media. Entries from minors (under the age of 18) must be accompanied by the permission of a parent or legal guardian.

8. Prize recipients will be determined by judges selected by C-SPAN and the judges' decisions will be final. Prize recipients will be asked to provide a social security number and will be responsible for any taxes associated with the prizes. C-SPAN reserves the right not to award all prizes; and C-SPAN reserves the right to not publish a winning essay.

9. Grand and first prize winners must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian for the duration of the "Looking for Lincoln Illinois Road Trip." Grand or first prize winners unable to make the trip do not forfeit their cash prize and will not be given the cash value of the trip in lieu of the trip itself. Only if the student winner is able to take the trip will his or her parent or legal guardian receive the trip. Prizes are non-transferable.

10. Neither C-SPAN's employees and their immediate families, nor its officers or directors are eligible to participate in the contest.

11. Prize recipients will be notified by C-SPAN.

12. Prize recipients will be required to send in a non-returnable photo to be used only for
C-SPAN promotional purposes.

13. Entries must be submitted by mail or the online entry form.  Mail submissions may be sent to:
