PEDAGOGICAL GOALS

  • To acquire an understanding of why the South and its supporters were adamant about the continuation of the institution of slavery
  • To assess the impact of slavery on the South and the free territories into their cultural and political institutions
  • To appreciate an observation by Albert Murray that slavery and race relations has impacted every aspect of life, law, and society in the United States.

    MODULE DESCRIPTION
    Students should READ Democracy in America, Vol. I, Chapter 18, "The Situation of the Black Population in the United States with which its Presence Threatens the Whites," and other related materials listed in the bibliography to obtain information on life in the 19th century. Classes may include wide-ranging discussions. It is possible that debates on some of the topics may occur.

    WRITING ASSIGNMENT
    Students should WRITE short papers (3 pages maximum) on one or more of the following topics:

  • Slavery impeded (did not impede) the economic development of the South.
  • Slavery created an identifiable permanent underclass in the U.S.
  • Slavery set the stage for race relations for all peoples in the U.S.
  • Slavery was the underpinning of the Southern economy in the 19th century.
  • Slavery was an impediment to the development of an industrialized economy.
  • Slavery was an impediment to the development of urban areas.
  • Can one reconcile slavery with the national ethos of All Men are Created Equal?
  • Slavery's affect on the expansion of the franchise and representative government.
