    MODULE DESCRIPTION
Many of those who were instrumental in helping Tocqueville formulate his ideas about American government and society were Whigs or political conservatives. Benders Modern Library College edition of Democracy in America lists the names of those whom he believes were most influential in bold type L to LVII. Have students CHECK their background in the Dictionary of American Biography.

    DISCUSSION STARTER OR WRITING ASSIGNMENT

  • After describing the politics of those whom Tocqueville visited, ASK what knowledge would a contemporary French visitor bring to similar discussion today. How could one determine that knowledge? (Both questions could be used as pre-lecture assignments.)
  • Given the politics of those whom Tocqueville visited, who would most likely be their contemporary counterparts? William Bennett, Jack Kemp, George Will, William Crystal, the Governors of New York, Ohio, Michigan, George Bush? Others? What would he learn from them? What topics in a new Democracy in America would be de-emphasized? What added?

    WRITING ASSIGNMENT

  • Variation 1: CONSTRUCT Tocqueville's interview with any of the figures mentioned above.
  • Variation 2: PREPARE an outline or an essay either updating a section of Tocqueville or adding one based on what he might have learned from contemporary interviews.

    RESEARCH
To do the above assignment students must understand the positions held by the individuals mentioned above. Have students VISIT the Purdue Archives Web Page for usable tapes. Among the interviews in the American Profile series, for example, is one with Jack Kemp. It might be wise for the instructor to acquire several such tapes before the class begins..
