BACKGROUND:
On March 4, 2004, the Library of Congress released the judicial papers of the late Supreme Court Justice Harry A. Blackmun (1908-1999). Justice Blackmun was appointed to the Supreme court by Pres. Richard Nixon in 1970 and served on the Court until his retirement in 1994. In 1997, Blackmun gave his papers to the Library of Congress, as has been the tradition among many former chief justices and associate justices. Blackmun directed that his papers not be opened to the public until five years after his death, which occurred in 1999. This stipulation is a shorter lapse of time than is usual with other justices who have directed the release of their papers. Consequently, most of the justices with whom Blackmun served are still sitting on the Court.

Blackmun's judicial papers fill roughly 1500 boxes. Additionally, the Library of Congress is releasing approximately 38 hours of a video oral history that Justice Blackmun did in the year following his retirement. The interviewer is a former Blackmun clerk, Harold Koh, who will assume the position of Dean of Yale Law School later this year. Highlights from these oral interviews will air on the C-SPAN networks in March.
