QUESTIONS & ANSWERS REGARDING THE STATE DINNER
 
President George W. Bush and Mrs. Bush are honored to host His Excellency, Aleksander Kwasniewksi, President of the Republic of Poland and Mrs. Jolanta Kwasniewska for the State Dinner on Wednesday, July 17, 2002. The President and Mrs. Bush made an official visit to Warsaw, Poland, where President Kwasniewski and Mrs Kwasniewska hosted a dinner in their honor on June 15, 2001. The White House State Dinner allows President Bush to personally thank President Kwasniewski for his hospitality and to show the nation and the world the importance of U.S.-Polish relations.

Who is invited to the State Dinner?
A diverse representation of guests from across the country, including elected officials, cabinet members, community leaders, academicians and civic leaders, will attend. Invitations were created by the White House calligraphers and mailed beginning in June. The State Dinner is the result of three months of planning.

Who prepared the menu?
The White House Chef Walter Scheib has served his creations at the White House for 8 years. Roland Mesnier is the White House Pastry Chef responsible for creating the dessert. His works of art have pleased guests and residents for 22 years.

Where does the dinner take place?
The dinner will take place in the State Dining Room, on the State Floor, following a reception in the East Room of the State Floor. Entertainment will also take place in the East Room. The guest receiving line will take place in the Blue Room.

How many guests will be in attendance?
One hundred thirty guests will be seated in the State Dining Room.

How are guests seated?
A member of the Bush Administration will serve as the table host at each of the 13 tables. A member of the Polish delegation sits to the table host's right. Traditionally, couples are seated at different tables.

What are the floral arrangements?
Chief Florist Nancy Clarke, who has worked in the White House Flower Shop for more than 20 years, has helped Mrs. Bush select a beautiful arrangement of red gerbera daisies (Ferrari), red floribunda roses (King) and green ivy in a crystal pedestal bowl. The flowers began arriving at the White House on Thursday, July 11.

How are the tablesettings decorated?
Cream colored damask tablecloths will cover the thirteen tables. The Reagan China, which is red and gold, the Vermeil Flatware, the President's House crystal pattern, first made by the Morgantown glass guild in 1961 for Mrs. Kennedy, and crystal candlesticks, with cream colored tapers, will be used at each table. The floral centerpieces will be in crystal pedestal bowls. The Polish flag, which is red and white, inspired the color scheme.

What is the itinerary for entertainment?
Marine Orchestra, during the guest reception in the East Room and throughout dinner. Brass horns and strolling strings during dessert in the State Dining Room. Jazz artist Vanessa Rubin will perform the after-dinner entertainment. A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Ms. Rubin sings as if she were telling a story. Her romantic music reflects an open, rich and articulate style. Marine Dance Band following the East Room Entertainment.

What is Mrs. Bush's attire?
Mrs. Bush will wear a two-piece Oscar de la Renta gown, which features blush colored tulle with gold threadwork and multi-colored stone embroidery, split jewel neck, long sleeves and a long trumpet skirt.

Who are the Social Secretaries?
The Social Secretary is Catherine Fenton. Mrs. Fenton served as Deputy Social Secretary for President Reagan for five years and to former President Bush for four years. Her deputy is Mrs. Jeanie Figg who served in President Reagan's and former President Bush's office.

In the last twenty years, when were State Dinners hosted for Presidents of Poland?
President George H.W. Bush hosted a State Dinner for Lech Walesa, during his visit to Washington, DC in March of 1991.
