In these calls from May 1966, LBJ considers regional issues with a Texas Senator and with the governor of Georgia. He also talks to a union leader about support from labor and discusses the minimum wage bill and other measures with Congressional leaders.

Hear more of President Johnson’s phone calls from July 1964. Campaign issues dominate these conversations, with the Democratic National Convention coming up in August. You’ll also hear LBJ talk about his meeting with Republican nominee Barry Goldwater and discuss civil rights issues, including racial unrest around the country. Participants in these calls include Deputy Attorney General Nicholas Katzenbach, White House Press Secretary George Reedy and chief Congressional aide Larry O’Brien. LBJ also gets a request from columnist Drew Pearson and teases Senate Republican Leader Everett Dirksen.

These calls take place July 23rd and 24th, 1964; and with the Democratic National Convention coming up in August, LBJ discusses potential problems for that meeting, as well as other campaign issues, with long-time friend and adviser John Connally, the Governor of Texas. You'll also hear calls with Senate Majority Whip Hubert Humphrey and Defense Secretary Robert McNamara.
