Listen to more of phone calls from August 1966. LBJ seeks advice on filling high-level State Department posts. He also continues to deal with a machinists’ strike against the airlines and tries to get ready for his daughter’s wedding. You’ll hear LBJ talk to key senators, cabinet members and White House aides. He also pressures a State Department official and a powerful union leader.

In these conversations LBJ deals with a machinists’ strike against the airlines continues to dominate these calls, as LBJ deals with the political as well as economic effects of the walkout. You’ll also hear calls about judicial appointments and politics and how stress is affecting the president’s waistline! Participants in these conversations include Labor Secretary Willard Wirtz, Deputy Attorney General Ramsey Clark and Senate Republican Leader Everett Dirksen. You’ll also hear LBJ talk to the chairman of the board of Brown and Root, whose company would become Halliburton subsidiary K-B-R.

This week features a special program of 1965 calls about the Voting Rights Act, which LBJ signed into law on August 6th of that year. You’ll also hear conversations about civil rights events that preceded the legislation. Participants in these calls include Attorney General Nicholas Katzenbach and Senate Leaders Mike Mansfield and Everett Dirksen.

In these August, 1966 calls, LBJ continues to deal with a machinists strike against the airlines, including a Senate resolution on the issue that he opposes. You’ll also hear calls about other legislation, racial violence and the pending marriage of the president’s youngest daughter. LBJ talks to Congressional leaders, cabinet members & White House aides and to his wife, Lady Bird.

Most of these calls deal with a strike against the airlines and LBJ’s objections to some Congressional proposals on the situation. The President also worries about the effects of the strike on Democrats in the pending Congressional elections. Participants in these calls include Senate and labor leaders and Attorney General Nicholas Katzenbach. You’ll also hear a former Senator ask LBJ for a big favor and Lady Bird Johnson talks about the upcoming wedding of the couple’s youngest daughter. Also hear an interview with LBJ Library Senior Archivist Regina Greenwell, about the latest release of LBJ's calls.
