Burmese Opposition Leader Speaks on U.S.- Myanmar Relations

Aung San Suu Kyi, the Burmese Opposition leader, is in the U.S. and speaks at an event co-sponsored by the United States Institute of Peace and the Asia Society on Tuesday.

She was introduced by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Her remarks focus on U.S.-Myanmar relations. The Obama Administration has said it’s considering easing sanctions against Myanmar, also known as Burma. 

During this event, Suu Kyi, Chair of the National League for Democracy and Member of Parliament from Kawhmu Constituency, received the Asia Society’s Global Vision Award. 

In 1991, she was under house arrest when awarded the Nobel Peace prize. She accepted the award in person on June 16, 2012 in Oslo, Norway.

Earlier in the day, Suu Kyi met with Secretary Clinton at the State Department.
