The New America Foundation hosts a panel discussion on the status of the Guantánamo Bay Detention Center.
The discussion marks the 11-year anniversary of the opening of the detention center on January 11, 2002. Since then, nearly 800 people have been held there and 166 are currently incarcerated.
Panelists speak in opposition to the detention center remaining open. They include: Andy Worthington, co-director of " Outside the Law: Stories from Guantánamo" and author of "The Guantánamo Files: The Stories of the 774 Detainees in America's Illegal Prison;" Retired Col. Morris Davis, executive director of the Crimes of War Education Project and former chief prosecutor of the U.S. Military Commissions at Guantánamo; and Thomas Wilner, partner at Shearman & Sterling LLP, who represented Guantánamo detainees in the Rasul v. Bush and Boumediene v. Bush cases.
