On September 27th, the Fred W. Smith National Library for the Study of George Washington at Mount Vernon held its grand opening. The library is open to researchers & is a resource on George Washington, Martha Washington, the American Revolution, slavery & more. The Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association raised more than $100 million for the library. Virginia Senators Mark Warner & Tim Kaine as well as Virginia Gov. Robert McDonnell spoke at the ceremony. Author David McCullough delivered the keynote speech & argued that Washington’s greatness came not from always succeeding but from learning from his failures.
