Douglas Elmendorf Remarks on Fiscal Policy

Congressional Budget Office Director Douglas Elmendorf used charts as he talked about the budget outlook. He said putting the federal debt on "a sustainable path will ultimately require increases in taxes or cuts in government benefits or services for people who consider themselves to be in the middle class." Topics included the Simpson-Bowles commission and potential changes to the economy due to sequestration and the federal debt. "Fiscal Policy Choices" was a presentation at the National Association for Business Economics (NABE) 2013 Economic Policy Conference held in the Washington Court Hotel. 

U.S. Economic and Budgetary Outlook

Robert Greenstein and Douglas Holtz-Eakin testified on the U.S. economic and budgetary outlook. Hr. Holtz-Eakin cited entitlement spending as an area needing reform. Mr. Greenstein recommended a more gradual approach to spending cuts than the automatic budget sequestration scheduled for March 1, 2013. Congressional Budget Office Director Douglas Elmendorf was present as scheduled but provided only written testimony due to time constraints.
