President Obama and Chinese President Xi Jinping spoke following their first meeting at what the White House had called an "informal summit" at a California estate. Among the topics were cyber security and North Korea. There was consecutive translations between English and Chinese. Annenberg Foundation Trust at Sunnylands is a retreat center in Rancho Mirage, California.

This event was hosted by the Heritage Foundation in Washington, DC.

U.S. and South Korea Relations with North Korea

A panel discussion was held on relations with North Korea. Former Assistant Secretary of State for East Asia Evans Revere said relations with North Korea might be heading toward a new phase after weeks of threats from the Kim regime. He said the North has followed a behavioral pattern over the years and that North Korean leaders would not be likely to use their nuclear weapons for offensive purposes, though he would not rule out the possibility of further nuclear and missile tests. U.S.-South Korea Relations

Korean Ambassador to the U.S. Y.J. Choi said that relations between the two countries "couldn't be better" following a summit between President Obama and South Korean President Park Geun-hye. He was followed by a panel discussion on trade, South Korea's nuclear program and relations with other East Asian countries. "Challenges and Opportunities in the U.S.-Korea Alliance" was the first panel of the forum "Assessing the U.S.-Korea Relationship: Looking Ahead" co-hosted by the Hanmi Club and the Korea Economic Institute of America.

North Korean Human Rights

Ambassador Robert King and others talked about the state of human rights in North Korea, the difficulties involved with making progress on the issue, and efforts by the U.S. to help. Ambassador King in his remarks said that North Korea was holding between 100,000 and 200,000 political prisoners, and that foreign radio broadcasts were the most common way of receiving information from outside the country. This discussion was part of the Institute for Corean-American Studies' Spring Symposium titled, "The Korean Peninsula Issues and U.S. National Security."

Steven Bucci and other panelists talked about U.S. foreign policy in Southeast Asia, especially in North Korea. Mr. Bucci argued that the U.S. was ill-equipped to make put an increased focus on Asia as articulated by the Obama administration, in part because of recent budget cuts to the Defense Department caused by sequestration. This discussion was part of the Institute for Corean-American Studies' Spring Symposium titled, "The Korean Peninsula Issues and U.S. National Security."

South Korean President Park Guen-hye spoke to a joint meeting of Congress about U.S. and South Korean relations.*In her remarks she proposed an international park on the border with North Korea as part of a peace initiative to reduce tensions in the region. She was the sixth South Korean leader to address a joint meeting of Congress.

President Obama and South Korean President Park Geun-hye held a joint news conference. Among the topics addressed were North Korea's nuclear and missile program and recent threats to test missiles and possible military actions. They said the two nations would stand firmly together against threats by North Korea and were ready for diplomacy to ease any nuclear threat. President Obama also commented on the use of chemical weapons in Syria and sexual assaults in the U.S. military.
