The panel is from a conference titled “Ethics of Political News Reporting and Advertising.” The full title of the panel discussion was “Political Commercials: Who Judges What is Ethical?” Professor Jamieson was the main speaker. She stated that the vigilance of the press was undermined in the 1988 presidential campaign by the inability of the Dukakis campaign to counter misleading ads and the Bush campaign’s ability to put the press on the defensive. Professor Jamieson showed and discussed the “Revolving Door” and “Boston Harbor” ads attacking Dukakis and the “Social Security” ad attacking Bush. She also showed a Kennedy commercial from the 1960 presidential campaign as an example of creating a myth to displace legitimate questions. close
