Committee members heard testimony concerning credit union membership. Treasury Department officials and National Credit Union Administration testified about the operations of credit unions and their importance to the economy and U.S. consumers. Congress in considering legislation to allow credit unions to have members outside the normal groups which they serve. This has been the practice of the National Credit Union Administration since 1982, but the U.S. Supreme Court ruled last month that this is illegal. close
