This program featured readings by nominees for the National Book Critics Circle Awards. The National Book Critics Circle is a 25 year old organization, comprised of some 600 book critics and book review editors. The nominees appearing at this event included: Joseph Ellis for American Sphinx: The Character of Thomas Jefferson; James Tobin for Ernie Pyle’s War: America’s Eyewitness to World War II; Anne Fadiman for The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down; Jon Krakauer for Into Thin Air: A Personal Account of the Mt. Everest Disaster; Pauline Maier for American Scripture: Making the Declaration of Independence; Don DeLillo for Underworld; Frank Bidart for Desire; Sonia Sanchez for Does Your House Have Lions?; Charles Wright for Black Zodiac; and Vivian Gornick for The End of the Novel of Love.
