The committee concluded hearings on the nomination of Anthony M. Kennedy to be associate justice of the Supreme Court. Martinez and Hernandez did not formally oppose the nomination but have some doubts about Judge Kennedy’s civil rights positions. Perdue, a former law partner of Judge Kennedy’s, and Kepley testified that he is open-minded and has deep respect for values. Colley, a black lawyer and long-time friend of Judge Kennedy’s, stated that the nominee is a fair man who wishes the best for all groups. close
