The hearing was held to study Chinese students in America and human rights in China. The subcommittee heard from members of Congress that have offered legislation to assist Chinese students.

Rep. Pelosi had offered a bill that was vetoed by President Bush that would have offered Chinese students the full protection of U.S. immigration law. The bill was vetoed by President Bush. The veto was overridden in the House, but was not in the Senate. close
