Mr. Styple discussed his book, [The Little Bugler: The True Story of

a Twelve-Year-Old Boy in the Civil War], published by Belle Grove. The book describes the life

of Gustav Shurmann who served as drummer, bugler and general’s

orderly in the Union Army during the Civil War. During the war, Gus

met President Lincoln and became a friend of his son, Tad.

Mr. Styple was dressed in a Civil War uniform while participating in

the annual re-enactment of the Battle of Cedar Creek near Winchester,

Virginia. This battle was credited with assuring President Lincoln’s

re-election. Tents and other re-enactors can be seen in the

background. Styple said the “living history” weekend also served to

raise awareness of the need for battlefield preservation in many

areas of the U.S. close
