Author Ms. Linda Kerber talked about her book No Constitutional Right to Be Ladies: Women and the Obligations of Citizenship, published by Hill & Wang Publications. The book is about how men’s obligations were to public service and women’s obligations were to family. She states in her book that absolution from public service for women has clear roots in the principle of coverture, by which a woman’s legal identity is absorbed by a man’s, be it her father, husband, or other protector. This, Kerber writes, is not a boon for women. close
