Members of the Armed Services Committee talked about the legislation on which they have been working. Senator Warner mentioned that many Senators are not pleased with President Clinton’s plan for defense spending. He also said that the committee established a special subcommittee to deal with the emerging military threats to the United States. Senator McCain described the difficulty the military is having in recruiting and keeping qualified personnel. Senator McCain stated that the committee is trying to restore and the morale and readiness of the military personnel by preparing legislation to increase benefits for members of the military. After their prepared remarks they took questions from reporters. close
