Surrounded by members of his newly-formed exploratory committee, Governor George W. Bush announced that the committee would advise him on whether he should seek the Republican nomination for President of the United States. He said that his responsibilities as governor of Texas would not permit him to travel to primary and caucus states until the summer. Following his announcement, each member of the committee made statements in support of his candidacy. Governor Bush then answered questions from the assembled press. He refused to answer any policy questions stating that those answers must wait until the summer when he begins his travels and full exploration. Earlier in the week, he held a press conference for the Texas press, while this announcement was billed as a press conference for the national press. close
