David Walker talked about the role of the U.S. Comptroller General and what the General Accounting Office does. The GAO, a legislative branch agency, follows the federal dollar and assesses federal programs throughout the world. Mr. Walker described the activities of the GAO which included conducting financial audits; assisting Congress with public policy analysis; evaluating the effectiveness of the programs; issuing legal opinions and decisions; adjudicating bid protests filed by private companies concerning the awards of federal contracts; and investigating waste fraud and abuse and mismanagement in government. close
