Vice President Millard Fillmore was sworn in as president in July of 1850, upon the death of President Zachary Taylor. When he was younger, he practiced law in New York State, and became a state assemblyman. He was first elected to Congress in 1832. He was nominated for the presidency in 1856 but lost to James Buchanan. close
