Mr. Forbes assessed the impact of economic policies of the Reagan administration on the economy. While he was supportive of the changes in the tax code, he indicated federal expenditures had not been cut enough. He also discussed causes of the balance of trade deficit. Mr. Forbes opened his speech with a number of jokes about his inherited wealth and his father who was editor of Forbes magazine. When asked to comment on the 1988 election he predicted that the Democratic nominee would be Mario Cuomo and the Republican nominee Jack Kemp or Pete DuPont. He speculated that George Bush could be the nominee, but was critical of Bush’s support of the economic policies Mr. Forbes advocated. At the end of his speech, Mr. Crane commented that there must be something wrong with the campaign finance laws that prevented someone like Mr. Forbes from being a presidential candidate. Mr. Crane further commented that perhaps there would be a boomlet of C-SPAN viewers who would promote a Forbes candida close
