The panel discussed libel law as it pertains to editorial cartooning. Mazer talked about the Falwell v. Hustler Magazine case. She described the significance of the case as being its use of emotional distress tort law rather than libel law. Emotional distress is much easier to prove than the “actual malice” required under traditional libel law. The Supreme Court decided 8-0 against Falwell. Murry discussed the Annenberg proposal to decrease libel litigation. close
