Denton L. Watson, author of Lion in Lobby, discussed his book concerning the life and times of Clarence Mitchell. Mr. Mitchell served as the director of the Washington bureau of the NAACP and became the foremost civil rights lobbyist in Washington. He was popularly called the “101st senator” and former Senate Majority Leader Howard Baker referred to Mr. Mitchell as the "lion in the lobby". Mr. Watson credits Mr. Mitchell as being an instrumental force in working to pass landmark civil rights legislation. close
