President George H. W. Bush announced David Souter as his nominee for the position of Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court. The position became vacant when Justice William Brennan announced his retirement. The Senate Judiciary Committee will begin hearings on the nomination in September. Judge Souter previously served on the New Hampshire Supreme Court and as New Hampshire Attorney General. He was appointed to the U.S. First Circuit Court of Appeals earlier in 1990.
