Douglas Hurd testifies before the House of Lords sub-committee on the European Community. Mr. Hurd is a member of the House of Commons and is also the foreign secretary of Great Britain. This is the United States equivalent of secretary of state. Toby Aldington, the first baron of the House of Lords, conducts the questioning of Mr. Hurd along with other members of the House. Some of the members involved in the questioning include: Lady Beatrice Serota, Lord Lionel Murray, and Lord Robert Carr. The two main tasks of the monetary union were to make the separate countries' institutions more effective, and to unite politically. The tape begins with the subcommittee already three minutes in progress. close
