The Joint Economic Committee heard testimony from Commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics Janet Norwood as she reviewed October unemployment figures. Lawrence Chimerine, the Senior Economic Counselor for Data Resources Inc a non-governmental distributor of economic data, commented on the deficit problem and his disappointment in proposals for Medicare and agricultural subsidies. He stated that the solution was to convert entitlement programs to means-tested programs. He also described the current recession and when the period of economic decline might end. Larry Kudlow, then a Senior Partner at Bear, Stearns & Co. and investment bank, responded to Mr. Chimerine’s statements and added his predictions for America’s economy. Donald Straszheim, the Chief Economist for Merril Lynch Capital Markets, acknowledged the current recession and mentioned that there was a possibility for a national economic collapse if the banking, oil, and political crises did not end. close
