Arlington National Cemetery, the national burial site for American soldiers, was established in 1864 on 612 acres of the estate owned by former General Robert E. Lee. There are 210,000 soldiers buried in the cemetery and approximately eighteen funerals take place per day. The eligibility for burial at Arlington National Cemetery includes anyone who has died while fighting on active duty in the United States Armed Forces, those who have retired after service in the Armed Forces, and those veterans who have been discharged from the services but who have received various military distinctions and awards. The cemetery serves as a monument to a diverse group of soldiers, actors, astronauts, and two former Presidents--all who have served in the military and committed a part of their lives to the United States Armed Forces. close
