Senate Democrats challenged President Bush’s Persian Gulf policy and questioned the need for immediate offensive military action to drive Iraqi forces from Kuwait. Senators demanded a greater role in decision-making regarding the crisis. Schlesinger, who was also director of the CIA, testified that the U.S. believes it will take about a year for international sanctions against Iraq to take full effect. The hearings were called in reaction to the president’s decision to send an additional 200,000 troops to Saudi Arabia to provide an “offensive military option.” close
