Mr. Riddell discussed yesterday’s British Conservative Party election of John Major to succeed Margaret Thatcher as prime minister. After eleven years in office, Mrs. Thatcher submitted her resignation to Queen Elizabeth II this morning. Major, a self-educated banker and chancellor of the exchequer in Thatcher’s cabinet, was her choice for successor. Mrs. Thatcher was forced to resign in an unexpected leadership challenge by former Defense Secretary Michael Heseltine, who was defeated by Major in the election. close
