In the first of a two-part interview, Mr. Keneally talked about his book, The Great Shame: And the Triumph of the Irish in the English-Speaking World, published by Doubleday. The book is not only a history of the author’s own and his wife’s families but is also an examination of the Irish Diaspora and the Irish people. He talked about one of his ancestors who was convicted of sedition and transported to Australian as a convict and another who escaped from Australia to the United States and became a general in the Civil War. He also described the 1845 potato famine that eventually forced the emigration of some millions of Irish to other countries. close
