President Bush announced the nomination of Ms. Martin, Republican representative from Illinois, to head the Labor Department. The President characterized her as one of his “unofficial advisers,” and has been known as a key Bush supporter. Labor leaders showed concern over her pro-business reputation. Former Tennessee Governor Lamar Alexander was nominated as education secretary, replacing Lauro Cavazos, who had resigned the previous week under pressure from the White House. The appointment of Mr. Alexander was praised by education leaders and signalled a positive move by the Bush administration to improve Bush’s image as the “education president.” close
