Rep. Beilenson discussed the effect of Soviet Foreign Minister Eduard Shevardnadze’s resignation upon U.S. Persian Gulf policy. Mr. Beilenson emphasized the importance of Shevardnadze to U.S. foreign policy toward the Soviet Union, but said that Shevardnadze’s resignation, and the possibility of conservative Communists rising to power in a possible upcoming power vacuum, has greater meaning to the Soviet people than to the rest of the world. close
