Following an historic first meeting between governors and U.S. Senate leaders, Senator Orin Hatch (R-UT) spoke briefly with reporters and predicted further meetings between the two groups on topics such as states' rights and health care. Then Governor Mike Leavitt (R-UT), chair, and Governor Paris Glendening (D-MD), vice chair of National Governors' Association, held their last news conference of the association’s four-day meeting. They also described the success of the meeting with Senate leaders and progress in interrelated federal-state areas. They said they hoped such a meeting would occur every year because the pressure of globalization and the technology-based economy demands changes in federal-state relations. They also summarized topics of the NGA sessions. They responded to questions from the media. close
