Ms. Willey, political columnist for the Arizona Republic, spoke on the political fallout in Arizona of the Senate Ethics committee hearings investigating five senators' conduct involving the failed Lincoln Savings and Loan. Arizona, the only state with both of its senators involved in the Keating Five hearings, had a high level of interest in the hearings because of their effects on future senatorial elections in the state and the high level of political awareness among the state’s citizenry. Senator DeConcini, according to polls Ms. Willey cited, was suffering the most in approval ratings when compared to Senator McCain, but both men were clearly hurt by their association with the Keating Five scandal. close
