The committee investigating the roles of five senators involved with the failed Lincoln Savings and Loan heard character testimony and began to hear closing arguments. The senators are accused of using their influence to prevent federal regulators from investigating the financial dealings of Lincoln Savings and Loan, a banking institution in California. Lincoln’s head, Charles Keating, donated sums of money to each senator’s campaign fund. The senators deny a breach of ethics in the matter. Beginning its ninth week of hearings, the committee heard from Don Edwards and Cruz Reynoso who spoke on behalf of Alan Cranston, one of the senators under investigation. Leslie Berger, aide to Senator Cranston, read six affidavits on Cranston’s behalf into the record. Senator Cranston was unable to appear before the committee due to treatments he was undergoing for prostate cancer. close
